Hi all

For welding Corten steel, we have in storage E8018-C1 Electrod, may it substitue  E8018-G, how can confirm ?

Hi Ghrab,

Corten is primarily a Copper added steel for weathering (atmospheric corrosion)  resistance, It comes in few grades, namely Coten -A & Corten-B. The default welding electrode which matches the BM chemistry is E-8018-W.

8018-C1 is (2.5%Ni) electrode, overallyed for Corten grades, not matching the BM chemistry. If the environment contains a lot of pollutants, there may be atmospheric corrosion overperiod of time.

Please find the data sheets for your help.

Thanks.

For which purpose you have to substitute with "G" Classification?

For welding of Corten steel, E7018-W2 / E8018-W2 is the right choose. Let me know the grade (Gr.A / Gr.B)?

dear Zakaria,
this grade is specially designed for cryogenic application.. additional  requriment    CVN Impact  @ minus oc.
so you can not use as alternative G grade.

Dear
Basicaly Corten is a weather resistance steel only E8018 W2applicable.It is slightly expansive. The chemical composition is totaly different than 8018 c1.If any body want to use 8018 c1 then the purpose of weather resistan will not siolve.

Hi everyone. i am also facing the almost same issue. we are short for E 8018 W2 electrode for corten steel. now contractor wanted to use  E 8018 G electrode as a W2 replacement. kindly guide me whether to allow him or not? reply kindly?

Hi Abuzar,

The default electrodes for these grades of steel is E-8018-W2/W1. However some electrode manufacturers may market this product under "G" classification. As per ASME Sec II part C, the "G" classification should meet the nominal chemistry in  specified in SFA 5.5.The additional alloying elements are acceptable  subject to mutual agreement between the manufacturer and the user.

If E-8018-G matches the chemistry of E-8018W2(for Corten -B) and E-8108-W1(for Corten-A), then the deviation may be allowed. You have  to compare the MTR's of both types of electrodes to arrive at a conclusion.

Thanks

E8018-G is general low alloy steel electrode means no fixed chemical composition requirements for all the alloying elements until or unless agreed between the supplier and purchaser. You should not be using this in place of E8018-C1 or E8018-W2.
Like E8018-C1 requires at least 2% Ni versus only 0.5% min. specified in E8018-G.

(attached find the chemical requirements of E8018-C1 and E8018-W2)
