Hi,
I have one ESTABLISHED  WPS for P-11 which is not purged by argon but as per our client specification purging is required for P-11. Can anybody tell me can i use ESTABLISHED WPS for with purged condition.  For that one, what is the criteria  & where it is written in code.
Regards
Pradip

According to ASME IX QW-256, QW-255, the deletion of backing gas is considered an essential variable. But, the addition of backing gas is not an essential variable.  This means that if you add a backing gas, a new WPS is not required by ASME IX.

However, your customer's specification may require a new PQR, with a new set of mechanicals, reflecting the purged condition..

QW-408.9 For groove welds in P-No. 41 through
P-No. 49 and all welds of P-No. 10I, P-No. 10J,
P-No. 10K, P-No. 51 through P-No. 53, and P-No. 61
through P-No. 62 metals, the deletion of backing gas or a
change in the nominal composition of the backing gas from
an inert gas to a mixture including non-inert gas(es).

IT IS NOT CLEARED THAT FOR P11.

Dear Dinesh,

This essential variable QW-408.9 only applicable in deletion of backing gas, not addition.

Best regards,
Kang

I am assuming root pass is GTAW or GMAW;

The general  non-essential variable QW-408.5 will apply unless the base metal is included in the P-No. groups listed in QW-408.9 ( an essential variable for those specific groups).  As your material is not included in QW-408.9, only the non-essential variable QW-408.5 applies.  A non-essential variable may be changed without requalification.  However, you may need to write a new WPS or revise your existing  WPS to permit the use of backing gas.

Hope this helps.

John
