For welding Pipe API 5LX52 to Flange ASTM A105  in a pipe line project we should use 7018 or 7010 is enough to give us the desired quality.( i think that fitting to fitting we have use 7018 but fitting to pipe, can we use 7010)

Dear Mohammed,

You can follow any one of the option for welding of X52 to A105.

  1. Root pass with E6010 and rest by E7010 by uphill or dollymix (root-uphill and rest-downhill) progression.
  2. Root pass with E6010 and rest by E7018 by uphill progression

No restriction on use of cellulosic or low hydrogen electrodes for welding of pipe to fittings/ flanges. However, for any repair welding, it is recommended to use low hydrogen electrodes in order to reduce hydrogen induced cracking problems.

Dear all,

Regarding reinforcement of piping branch connection As per ASME B 31.3 para.304.3

Can we use two halves pipe for reinforcement of header pipe considering the actual Dh/Dt ratio is not fulfilling the requirements para 304.3.1(b).

Does ASME B 31.3 shall allowed these type of connection?

The same type branching connection mostly used in HOT tapping procedure.

Thanks in advance

Vinayak

Dear Mohammed,

What is size of pipe and Flange.  As per API 1104 and also as per many client specifications calls for repair procedures.  So to have better quality it is prudent to Root with TIG welding with ER 70S3 and followed by E 7018 with full up hill welding.  The welding quality in up hill welding is better than down hill welding.   Down hill welding is only preferred for higher productivity.  For fittings as per Qatar petrolium specifications only up hill welding is allowed.  You must do preheating also as the flanges are of higher mass.  Do preheating up to 100 C.

It is the preferred method to use ONLY uphill welding when using a stick welder for fear of slag inclusions in the finished weld

Hi MOHAMMED too you can use Root pass with E7010A1 and rest by E8018G by uphill progression, We welded with it welding procedure.
the 7018 stress is very close the base metal stress, is better use 8018.

105 N has UTS less than 70 PSI  so you should go with only 70xx than 80xx.
