difference between buttering& build up

Dear All
what is difference between buttering& build up?because both of them are surfacing activities acc to AWS A.3.0
we have a branch connection in piping that header cut,the hole has a 2in bigger than O.D of branch.
we have a qualified groove wps acc to ASME IX that have a thickness range of 5-30mm.the thickness of header is 25mm.
Now which word must be used in this case?we can build up header with thick of 25mm and width of 45-50mm acc to groove wps?

Hi,

We have 3 common experssion here:

1- build up : this experssion used for repair of materials that are used in mechanical calculations.then its used for thickness make up.

2- buttering : this experssion used when we are 2 different material for transfixion.in this cases we must used a buffer layer , that are named buttering.

3- cladding : this experssion used when we are welding on a surface for hard face process or corrosion resistance.

The main differences between build-up and buttering is that buttering is used for dissimilar material while build-up is for the same base material
