PWHT requirements are specified in the “book” or construction Code sections (i.e.  Section I, Section VIII, B31.1) or by customer specification.  Sc IX on tells one the requirements for qualifying welding or brazing procedures  and personnel working to them.  As such Sc IX does not specify a minimum thickness for PWHT than the applicable procedure thickness range based on PQR thickness.

Hi venkateswaran

1) PWHT as per UCS-56 is mandatory for welded joints over 38 mm nominal thickness.

2)  for welded joints of  nominal thickness over 32 mm through 38 mm, PWHT is not required if  preheat is applied at a
minimum temperature of 95 degree celcius during welding.

Please go through all the notes, in UCS-56 for exceptions.

Thanks
