Hi All,

Can any one tell me which is the best suitable material for Sea water application in offshore environment.Client specification shows Cu-Ni material,we are facing problem with procurement(Long lead time). So i am planning to replace it by Galvanized Carbon steel,Is it computable for Long term use.If any one have experience please share me.

I know we can use some FRP material, but still i want to go for metallic material. Please share me some of your experiences.....

Regards,
Prakash

Cu-Ni is for sure the cheapest solution.
Galvanised carbon steel is not suitable for offshore application in seawater service, austenitic stainless steel are also not suitable.

Other suitable metallic materials - but more expensive are: Titanium and under certain conditions also super duplex stainless steel (25% Cr).

regards
Kristian

Dear,
Plz go for GRP(Glass reinforced plastic) material.

Fibre Glass Reinforced Plastic Pipe is a matrix or composite of glass
fibre, polyeser resin and fillers. These pipes possess better strength
durability high tensile strength low density and are virtually
inert.Fibre Glass pressure pipes are intended to be manufactured in
diameters upto 2400mm and length upto 18m. These pipes are now being
taken up for manufacture in India. Standard specifications have been
farmed by the BIS and for further details of G.R.P. Pipes please refer
to IS 12709 :1989

Yours truely,

Hi ,

GRP pipe is best cost will be more. you can say lifelong service.
Don't go for Galvanized item it will not with stand for long run at
least two three years difficult. Cu Ni larger dia pipe is difficult and
more expensive.

For cheap and long run say 15 / 20 years , cs pipe IS 3589, internal
coating with Poly glass coating ,it is cheap and easily you can get it.

If going for GRP or GRE piping, as recommended by many others, the following should be noted:

a) Supporting of GRP/GRE is much more intensive than that of metallic piping - follow design standard (ISO or ASME or NORSOK) and manufacturers recommendations.
b) GRP/GRE piping is much sensitive to pressure surges - i.e. pump start/stop, sudden opening/closing of valves, etc.
c) Establish a programme for NDT of the piping joints.
d) Establish together with pipe system manufacturer (Ameron, Bondstrand or other) detailed jointing procedures. (similar to welding procedures)
e) Establish together with pipe system manufacturer (Ameron, Bondstrand or other) a jointing operator gualification system for those that shall perform the jointing (similar to welder qualification system).
f) During piping fabrication very controlled workshop conditions should be kept - facilities to be approved by the pipe system manufacturer  (controlled humidity, no oil in the air, controlled temperature - all in all very much alike laboratory conditions).
g) Supervisor from the pipe system manufacturer (Ameron, Bondstrand or equal) to be on site during the pipe spool fabrication/joining.

Done the right way a good - but expensive solution - but also with a long life time.

Good quality GRP/GRE manufacturing is difficult and expensive.
But so it is also for gluing parts for aircrafts.

Regards
Kristian
