dear all,

good day.

what is the purpose of using a dual certified material.

Example -  Plate  used for vessel fabrication as per ASME SEC VIII DIV1 is  dual certified as SA 516 GR 60 and SA 516GR70.

What will be the tensile strength of this plate and impact properties. whether these properties will be as per SA516 GR 60  OR sa 516 GR. 70.

Thanks in Advance.

Regards

Hi

In order to save money, fabricators fabricate and clients order material which satisfies more than one materials specifications requirements. This way by manufacturing a steel meeting, say grade 70 requirements can also be used in place of grade 60.

Would suggest to wait for a senior's reply, but I think my bit of information would help you understanding the basic reason behind this.

Hi,

I have never seen SA516-60/SA516-70 dual marked material. I think it’s almost impossible marking considering chemical properties. 300 series austenite stainless steel such as 304/304L, 316/316L is commonly marked as dual on mill certificate. Dual mark is a quite advantageous choice for mill maker. Because they can produce two kinds of product at one line. Also it make easier management of stock.

And If you use dual marked material, you have to choice a material type according to fabrication drawing. Because a designer specify only one material (not dual marked material) on relevant drawing considering strength, corrosion and etc.

Dual certificate menas

Chemical properties compliance with of lower grade material i.e Gr 60 & mechanical properties  compliance with higher grade materials i.e of Gr.70

Customer has specific requirments particular chemical & mechanical properties thts why they specify dual grade material or certificate required.

Hope the matter is useful.
