“SA” is not an acronym.  It is just a designation given to the ferrous material specifications adopted by ASME to distinguish it from material specifications from other organizations.  There are also ASME “SB” specifications and they are for the nonferrous material specifications.

The ASME SA- specifications are in ASME Section II, Part A and the ASME SB- specifications are in ASME Section II, Part B.  The latest edition is the 2013 edition.

SA is an ASME specification for the analysis of ferrous materials. A387 / A387M are the specification number for that particular material. 06a is the year when it was approved by ASME. While 'P" is the number assigned to that material because of its properties. the numerical figure 91 attributes the composition of elements it contains. I found the regarding info in www.weldpedia.com
