Hi Mr Mohammad,

Normally SAW, no BT Burn through will not come as the root and hot pass will be
already welded. This will act as back up and while welding there will be fill
up passes and capping only required. No chances of BT in SAW so it is not
mentioned in API 5 L . Even though due to any untoward circumstances any BT
created then the same shall be repaired.

As I think there can be root can also be welded from SAW with backing
on the other side...That may be ceramic backing...

Dear Mr.Dajidalam Mohd.

As far as my knowledge &  as  worked in Verious American  Projects for shop floor line pipe inspection for Dove Chemicals and verious other projects, as per APL line pipe Repair in pipe is accepted in certain depth of welding from out side only (i.e.ID repair is not permited). Suggested for Cut-off  due to Burn through problem.(i.e.Repair is not permitted for Burn through).Pl be analises API 5L properly .At present API 5L Code book not available with me however I shall come back to you shortly.
If anythings else pl revert mail.

Regards,

RK Vichare

Dear Mohit,
Please forget about acceptance criteria and becarefull about the following hints:
1- If the weld relevant to a sever condition prosess, it should be repair and there is no way solution for that.
2- If you want to now, why you had this defect ? This is relevant to high heat input during the welding. It could be relevant to A: low travel speed B:high welding amper C:  too much angle of bevels D: Using of the big electrod or wire ( I don't no what was your welding prosess) E:Untoward ARC welding and ...
warm regards
M.Masoumi

Hi Mohammad,

You are correct to say that nothing is mentioned in API 5L spec but Arc burns are not acceptable by spec so i treat Burn through in similar manner,

Removal and rewelding would be required so you should have a Weld repair PQR to do the repairs, if not then qualify a new PQR (if intending to use process other than SAW), check client spec to know if any additional requirement for the repairs (PWHT etc...)

Should you need any info feel free to post.

Regards
Manpreet Singh
