Dear All,

Can anyone tell me regarding the cutting of SA 335 P22 pipe cutting procedure.

Can we go for Flame cutting or is it mandatory to cut it by Grinding wheel.

Is it mentioned anywhere in standard regarding oxygen flame cutting restriction and the reasons behind this.

If cutting by Oxygen flame is done and if it is not good what corrective action to be taken against this..

Preheat before using flame cutting and grind off heat affected zone before fit up and weld should be fine.

Customer of ours accept this practice even for P91 grade. Anyhow , lot of customers including our QC gang prefer to see 9Cr steel be cut by machining.

But for P22 which has lower Cr , it should not be very serious like P91.

P91 is not possible to cut by Oxy-fuel flame cutting

Is recomended cut with mechanical cutting and Too you can with plasma cutting, the OFC affect the area cutting in stailess steel.

Hi

refer to probability of martensite formation during cutting due to carbon content and alloy element of these kind of steels the hardness may increase to 440 VHN (the base metal hardness is 162~168 VHN) and it will cause to cold crack in base metal, so to prohibit this failure 150 °C preheat + machining after cutting is recommended.

Dear Binoy:

Preheat is necessary + machining after flame cutting

Do not forget to examine the surface by MT before further application (fit up, welding etc.).
This way, you will detect possible cracks and can grind them out.

If Cr is less than 3%, then flamme cut by oxy-fuel is easily cut

As you want to cut it you can also do it with oxygen flame cutting but for controlling hardness and to avoid serration you can do preheat and if. Thickness is less you can also cut it by grinding self grinder.

If you cat by flame, then you have to apply the same preheat as for welding!!!
