GTAW Vs SMAW

[Prasu Cutie]

Dear Experts,

for the same current voltages are different for GTAW & SMAW why???  Plz explain

GTAW     90-180A   9-14V


SMAW    90-180A   22-26V

Power Intensity varies thats why votages varies.. 

GTAW is high intensity so voltage is less 

SMAW is less intensity welding process so required a bit high votlage,more over melting rate is very high in case of SMAW ,since electrode flux high voltage is required .

Due to more resistance of SMAW Electrode size and length for current to flow, higher voltage is required

Look at the size of the arc...
narrower the arc, less voltage is needed...

Moreover, the plasma is different, for SMAW its more CO2 but for GTAW, its Argon...
Different plasma makes different arcs with different electrical characteristics...

the electrode is different too...
The voltage required to "fire" electrons from Tungsten is different than that of stick electrode in SMAW

Many parameters are involved...
