Dear friends,

I am not very clear about the words Calibration, Validation of welding equipments.

Calibration is defined in some of the literature as all the operations for the purpose of determining the value or errors of a measuring instruments. (Checking the measuring instruments correctness such as A, V meters)

where as Validation is defined as all the operations for the purpose of demonstrating that an item of Arc welding equipment or welding system complies with the operating specification for that welding equipment or syestem( Checking the correctness of equipment).

I seen many fabrication  shops  doing calibration not Validation.

BS 7575-2000  is also having titile  " Code of Practice for Validation of arc welding equipment".

Can any body  suggest me  wether welding equipment requires  Calibraion or Validation?

Regards

P.K

Dear Friends,
Welding equipments need calibration i e the ammeter and voltmeter is to be calibrated.Frequency is once in 3 months.
validation is required for the welding process and not for welding equipments.

Dear Mr. Muniyandi,

Will you please inform where I can get the details of this frequencies
for calibration?

Hi all,
Calibn - OK, Process- validation required in case of any change in essntial variables only.
Otherwise, most Codes do accept certain std processes for their work, if not, then validation would be definitely required.

Dear All,

Plz find review BS EN 17662-2005. Hope it helps !!! I tried to attach the std. but it exceeds the attachment limit.

Normally, as a standard practice, we go for a FUNCTION CHECK for the welding machines i.e., using a calibrated Digital Clampmeter to check the output of the Welding machine after setting the required current/voltage paramaters, making sure before checking that the input supply to the welding machine is as per requirement (recording fluctuations in power supply, if any).

Regards,
Puru.

pl. don't share any copy right material such as codes, company
standards etc in any public forum like this. instead you can just give
referance to a partcular para of code/std.

Thanking you all for coopeartion

Dear Mr. Rajagopal,

API 6A is specific for wellhead and christmas tree equipments and the
contents in it shall not be applicable for other purposes.

As welding is a special process,Process validation is must.
