Dear Experts,

Please explain a welder is qualified on ½ inch dia Carbon steel pipe butt joint with GTAW process. So he can weld on ½ inch dia stainless steel pipe butt joint with GTAW process. If any problem for material composition?

Thanks,

Pkm.

As he is qualified on without backing process(CS GTAW), he can weld on with back  process(SS GTAW), as per sec ix he will be qualified throughout the p material series from CS to SS, so material grade isn't a problem.

Regards
Richard

Dear Pkm,

The welder is qualified for all the Essential variables for welders like Outer diameter, P.No, F.No, Welding Process & thickness. There is only one major change in SS welding is back purging(backing). A welder qualified without backing, can weld with backing as per ASME sec IX.
So a welder qualified in CS without purging can weld SS with purging..

regards
JP

As ASME Sec 9 removal of inert gas backing is essential variable so as per code yes , & same is not for a SS welder welding CS joint

yes he is also qualified for ss pipe because as per ASME sec IX addition of inert gas backing is not a essential variable so he is qalifed for both with or without gas purging.
