Yes Tack welding can be done by Pipe Fitters provided those tack welds are removed and donot form a part of completed weld joint.

Else Pipe Fitters can be Qualified inaccordance with ASME Sec.IX for welder qualification.

We cannot use the unqualified welders to do tack welds, please give the training to pipe fitters and qualify them as per Sec IX( at least in flat position ) .

All the welding should be done by qualified welders it includes the tack welding also .

Hi,
As per B31.3 - K328.5.1 (c) - Tack welds Shall be made by a Qualified Welder or Welding Operator. According to that, you cannot use your fitters for tack welds unless otherwise they qualified.

If the tack welding is final part of the weld, it should be done by a qualified welder. Otherwise no need.

Tack welding must be done by the qualified person. Either its going to
be the part of the weld or its going to be removed before welding.
If the final weld include the tack, then the test piece during
qualification can have same condition practically, thats actually
means by welding qualification.
The qualification can be done as per ASME sec 9 or EN-287-1

Hi,

Qualification is required (see applicable design code).

e.g. ASME VIII/1, UW-31 CUTTING, FITTING, AND ALIGNMENT
….
(c) …..Tack welds, whether removed or left in place, shall be made using a fillet weld or butt
weld procedure qualified in accordance with Section IX. …

Dear all,

The question is " Can we do tack weld by pipe fitters according to ASME 31.3? "

so, we should go to ASME B31.3.

The Code said on part 328.5.1 (c) Tack welds shall be made by a qualified welder or welding operator.

Yes you are rigth we need to follow the indicated standart. Because for example  if you check  in API 653 it says ,

10.4.2.7

Tack welds used in the assembly of vertical joints of tank shells shall be removed and shall not remain in

the finished joint when the joints are welded manually. When such joints are welded by the submerged-arc process,

the tack welds shall be thoroughly cleaned of all welding slag but need not be removed provided that they are sound

and are thoroughly fused into the subsequently applied weld beads. Tack welds shall be made using a fillet-weld or

butt-weld procedure qualified in accordance with Section IX of the ASME Code. Tack welds to be left in place shall be

made by qualified welders.

It says if your tack will not be include in weld metal ,eg. manuel welding method, you can use unqualified welder
