Hi,
I am seeking insights from anyone who has experience meeting the 0.015 in. lateral expansion requirement for full-size Charpy V-notch tests at -320°F for SAW SS316L welds, as outlined in UHA 51 of ASME Section VIII, Division 1-2025. The base metal is SA 240 Type 316L, which has been solution annealed prior to welding and is 1.50 in. thick.
If you have relevant experience, I would greatly appreciate it if you could provide details on the following aspects:
The impact of using more passes versus fewer passes,
The comparison between square wave AC and DCEP,
The maximum heat input utilized,
The effects of low delta ferrite (2-5 FN) in the weld versus Creq/Nieq ratios (<1.48 or >1.95),
Solidification modes observed (e.g., F to A, A to F),
The morphology of ferrite (e.g., vermicular or lathy),
The cooling rate (still, air, or water-cooled),
Any metallographic observations related to the formation of M23C6 or sigma phase,
Any additional observations related to crystallography or texture.

The comparison between square wave AC and DCEP, use Lincoln 1000-SD ( Hope you understand if you have this machine)
The maximum heat input utilized-- For SAW welding Limiting Value 2.5 KJ/mm ( Note: Don't keep Heat Input below 1.5KJ/mm)
The effects of low delta ferrite (2-5 FN) in the weld versus Creq/Nieq ratios (<1.48 or >1.95), ( Nippon Steel SAW wire & Flux BEST IN CLASS Convey this to them through TDC , THE R & D Team will take care, and on the shop floor you will not face any issue.
Solidification modes observed (e.g., F to A, A to F), It will be FA Mode.
The morphology of ferrite (e.g., vermicular or lathy), ( Why are you interested in It? Please share. It's a research Work or a shop floor job
The cooling rate (still, air, or water-cooled), Normal Cooling Still Air IP should be less than 175 OC.
Any metallographic observations related to the formation of M23C6 or sigma phase? No sigma in weld if wire is from Nippon ( I don't have any commercial interest in Nippon, but this wire & flux is best in class, miles ahead of any other, & R & D support is awesome.
Any additional observations related to crystallography or texture.
