When a lip type joint is specified as per ASME Sec VIII div 1,   UW16.1 figure  f-4 (as below), can the lip be made with weld metal buildup?

UW 16 C (1)  states ;

Integral reinforcement is that reinforcement provided in the form of extended or thickened necks, thickened shell plates, forging type inserts, or weld buildup which is an integral part of the shell or nozzle wall and, where required, is attached by full penetration welds. See Fig. UW-16.1 sketches (a), (b), (c), (d), (e), (f-1), (f-2), (f-3), (f-4), (g), (x-1),  (y-1), and (z-1) for examples of nozzles with integral reinforcement where the F factor in UG-37(b) may be used.

I am not sure but this option with clarification with AI can be used.

To overcome the concern raised by Sunil,  PWHT or similar treatment can be carried out after build up and prior to making butt weld.

Thanks and Regards.

On my opinion yes, but you have to consider the specific qualification requirements of the section IX for build-up (QW-202.3)

    ASME VIII code does not provide such provision. Further, this type of joint is mainly provided for item in cyclic service (mainly by Licensor) to avoid the peak stresses at the nozzle to shell junction.

    If weld buildup is used,  that junction area is already having residual stresses, further the grain orientation which we obtain through the forged saddle type nozzle can not be achieved by weld buildup.

    In my opinion, it has to be forged construction only. Members may please further share their experience.
