Comparison of Large Dia Flanges (B16.47 series A & B) in Refinery services

Hi,

I have to use 30", 42", 48" pipes in Cude Oil, Naphtha, HSD and CRWS services.
What is the criteria between the series A & B for ASME B16.47. Regarding no. of bolts, enonomy, availability etc.
If anyone to know this please.

Dear Mr Krishnakumar,   To standardize the pipe flanges for sizes NPS 26 to NPS 60 for class 75 through to Class 1500 ASME B 16.47 was developed . At that time it was decided to include the flange dimensions as per MSS SP 44 flanges except Class 75 which are ASME/API 605 flanges. Since the dimension of these two classes of flanges were not compatible with each other it was decided that  MSS SP 44 flanges are B 16.47 Series A flanges and  API 605 flanges are designated as B 16.47 Series B flanges.   Standards followed: ASME B 16.5 : UP TO SIZE NPS 24 ASME B16.47 SR.A / SR.B : UP TO SIZE NPS 60 (for rating150& 300) AWWA C-207 : UP TO SIZE NPS 144 (without Hub) & UP TO SIZE NPS 96 (With Hub) - Pls. refer this standard while giving reference of this for any size. Dear Krishnakumar,
 
I addition to below valuable information here are some more important points to consider.
 
1) For process piping ( services you mentioned) normally Series A flanges been used. Series A flanges are heiver in weight with more no of bolts and in continuation of ASME B16.5.
2) For CWS you can use series B flanges since they are compact and light weight and hence more economical.
3) For the compatibility purpose you need to check existing flanges series.
 
 
Please do not mix series A flanges with Series B flanges, otherwise it will be a big mess. Hope the above information will be helpfull for you.
