Hi,
Find below the ASME-IX Interpretation. Hope it will clear your doubts.

“direct visual control” - welding operator having direct visual control and giving verbal command to the welding operator having remote control.

“remote visual control” - welding operator having remote control and follow the verbal commands from welding operator having direct visual control with the weldment.

Interpretation: IX-95-31
Subject:            QW-361.2, Essential Variables – Machine Welding
Date Issued:     May 30, 1996
File No:            96-141

Background:  A welding operator has direct visual contact with a pipe weldment that is being welded utilizing machine orbital pipe welding equipment.  This welding operator is giving verbal commands to a second welding operator, who does not have eye contact with the weldment, and who is positioning the weld head and wire aimers located on the head remotely, during the welding of the joint in accordance with the verbal commands of the first operator.  Each welding operator has been qualified to perform both remote and direct visual control welding.

Question:  Are these welders qualified to make the subject weld in accordance with QW-361.2, even though the welding operator having direct visual control is directing the positioning of the orbital pipe welding equipment verbally and does not have “hands-on” control of the welding head?

Reply:  Yes.

Thanks & Regards,

(Karthik)

The direct visual means the welding operator is still controlling the manipulation of the machine during the entire operation, while in remote control machine, once the parameter has been set up, the operator will just turn on the machine and machine will work on his own. It is essential variables bec of the different skill level of the welder plus diff type of machine. Having diff welding qualification also. thanks.
