For stainless steels in low temperature applications, charpy impact acceptance criteria is lateral expansion not absorbed energy. For example see ASME Sc. VIII UHA-51 or B31.3 paragraph 323.3.5(b).

Dear Anurudh,
As per the material specification A312 impact test is not mandatory for TP 304 grade material upto -250°C. Pl. refer to the first paragraph of this material specification.
Secondly, if your project specification requires impact test to be carried out at -196°C then it is recommended to measure the lateral expansion instead of the impact values.
which is 0.38 mm or higher per this material specification or per B31.3, Pl.refer clause no. 323.3.5 of B 31.3.
Regards,
PARAG PANSARE
Yes John.
However, for those who are using ASME for Pressure equipment to be certified in accordance with 97/23/EC, besides the lateral expansion, the value of 27 Joule has to be obtained on a standard ISO specimen

You have to look in your design code for this. You will find this info neither in ASME IX nor in A312
