Hi,
For pipe line HT (Hydro test) section might be as small as to 1 joint, and maximum length shall be govern by respective codes & standard.
Further Pipe line section will be depend on so many parameters … few of the key points to be noted while finalizing the section length of the pipe line are
1. Maximum and minimum elevation levels in the pipe line..(will Impact pressure difference)
2. Design pressure, test pressure, working pressure’s
3. Pipe line design - factor of safety.
4. Application of line (water, oil, gas, crude and etc)
5. % of SMYS considered for design.
6. Temperature variations.
7. Crossings covered in the section
8. Code / standard following..
9. Testing medium…
10. Duration of test.
11. Pipe line status – buried, or open, or covered etc…
12. Provision of water sources and draining.
13. Type of joint inspection (ex if 100% RT was done, we will go for longer sections, if no NDT is offered in joints – better to limit for small sections, as if any defects identified, dewatering the entire section will be difficult)
Permanent or temporary flanges and all are not the criteria – in general it will be planned for a HT header, which include water filling facility, pressurization ports, measurement ports and etc…
Header will be either flanged or welded type, and flanges are also like that either a permanent or a temporary – there is no limitation.
But due care has to be taken, that after HT – no more welding’s are advisable.
And location of the flange will be as per your section…
