Dear Experts,

Can anybody from our experts,  share some information regarding vacuum pack low hydrogen electrode. Specially about the baking of this electrodes,  if left out.

Thanks & regards,

Dear Jay,

Vacuum packed Low hydrogen electrodes, may be used without baking, if, packing is not damaged.

If electrodes are exposed to atmosphere same to be baked as per electrode  manufacture requirements or as specified by client specification.

You may refer  Table 3 in SFA-5.1 in ASME Sec II part C for baking temperatures &  para 5.3 in  AWS D 1.1 ( addition 2004) for storage of Low hydrogen electrodes.

Dear Experts,

As a corollary to this, is there any need to vacuum pack any TIG Welding Rods?

Tig rods are not needed to be vacuum packed since it does not contains flux/coatings which attracts moisture.

Bake 300-350'celcius
1-2 hours
Store 150'celcius shelf life
Small batches in heated quivers
70' celcius/quivers
Record no. of bakes / not more than 3
15ml/100g

Please not vacum packed electrodes dont get baked first time around because there is no water content.....so make sure this is true first......

Low hydrogen vacuum pack electrodes

It can be used without baking subject to intact packing . Keeping in view of practical problem of rebacking in project site where, every time controlling of rebacking is not possible, results hydrogen induced defects may be occur. To get rid of such problems we can use vacuum packed electrode. This vacuum pack will not only retain the minimum hydrogen level but also become ease to use the electrode without expensive rebacking at remote. It  can be put in portable oven maintaining temperature 70-80º C ready to use.

But consumable should be properly vacuum packed as per process.

 Advantage:

·         No need of rebacking means we can save electricity and time.

·          Reduction of Hydrogen induced crack.

·          To get minimum Hydrogen level in weld metal.

Thanks

Dear Jay,

As per Aramco Standard requirement, vaccum packed electrodes (E7018) can be used for a maximum of four hours without using any baking or portable oven.  It can be used for eight hours if it continuously maintained at 60 degree in a portable oven. If the left over electrodes are to be used after eight hours , it needs to be re-dried.

Regards,

Anup
