Dear all

for welder qualification can we use sec IX instead of 1104 for cross country pipelines.

if no ,what is the issue behind?

Regards
Baskaran.

Dear Baskaran,

I think,It is a code requirement to qualify welders and welding procedures based on API 1104.Some non essential variables in ASME BPV SEC IX are  essential variable in API 1104.For eg. Diameter of pipe.As per ASME B31.8,we have option to choose ASME BPV SEC IX or API 1104 for welder qualification. But the weld acceptance criteria is API 1104.Most of the clients prefer API 1104 for pipeline construction(normally downhill /dolly mix)as it is relatively easy to execute compared to ASME BPV(normally uphill).

As per ASME B31.4, 2009 Edition,

434.8.3 Welder and Welding Procedure Qualifications

(a) Welder and welding procedure qualifications for cross-country pipelines shall be performed in accordance with API 1104.

As per ASME B31.8, 2010 Edition

823 QUALIFICATIONS OF PROCEDURES AND WELDERS

823.1 Requirements for Qualifying Welders on Piping Systems Operating at Hoop Stresses of Less Than 20% of the Specified Minimum Yield Strength.

Welders whose work is limited to piping operating at hoop stress levels of less than 20% of the specified minimum yield strength shall be qualified under any of the references given in para. 823.2.1 or in accordance with Mandatory Appendix G.

823.2 Requirements for Qualifying Procedures and Welders on Piping Systems Operating at Hoop Stresses of 20% or More of the Specified Minimum Yield Strength

823.2.1 Qualifying Standards.

Welding procedures and welders performing work for new construction and out-of-service pipelines shall be qualified under Section IX of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code or API 1104. For in-service welding, welding procedures and welders shall be qualified under Appendix B of API 1104. Procedures qualified under Appendix B for either branch or sleeve welds are suitable for weld deposition repair, provided the procedure is appropriate for the remaining wall thickness to which it is being applied.

821.4 Weld Acceptance

The standards of acceptability for welds of piping systems to operate at hoop stress levels of 20% or more of specified minimum yield strength as established in API 1104 shall be used.

Regards,

Limesh
