Dear MPK,
Normally we don't find the extend  of purging in any spec or code.
if the thickness of the pipe is more than 5mm i dont think there will be any oxidation inside pipe side....
if the pipe thickness is less than that, better use purging to avoid oxidation..
However it is recommended to use purging for at least root run.

Hi,

Purging is carried out for many pipeline and socket applications but most commonly on materials, which are being used for their corrosion resisting qualities or where they oxidise very easily. Some industries and their codes of practice may require higher standards of purge purity, as it is this that can often determine the rate at which corrosion takes place. In case of your application you will need to review data produced by the material suppliers regarding baseline information as to the rate of corrosion, in a given corrosive environment, over a set period of time and reach a decision accordingly.

Please keep in mind that as welding takes place the parent material can be affected by oxidation, nitride formation, and loss of alloying elements, if the quality of the purge is not good enough. These problems will then lead to a reduction in corrosion resistance in and around the root of the weld in comparison to the rest of the component. This can significantly reduce the working life of the component or in the worst case lead to its failure in service, perhaps in catastrophic circumstances. As you may be aware, the only way to know exactly what the affect oxygen levels in the purge will have is to carry out a series of test welds and then undergo accelerated corrosion testing such as the G48 test.

If you wish to have more information, please contact.

Thanks.

IF YOU DO NOT USE GAS BACKING DURING THE WELDING OF SS SOCKETS WE RISK TO HAVE SUGARING IN THE INTERNAL SURFACE OF THE WELDS.
IT WOULD BE BETTER NOT TO TAKE CHANCES AND USE GAS BACKING
