Dear members

Can you please guide me to select PQR test coupon on the basis of my below requirement

1. PQR to be used for my job thickness 6.0 mm to 13 mm
2. Material of construction is SA516 GR.70 plate.
3. Welding process to be involved is only SMAW.
4. Test coupon to be Normalized at 900 deg.C after completion of welding.
5. Bend test, Tensile, Hardness & Impact test to be carried out as per Sec. IX.
6. All joints to be single V type and to be back chip for final run.

kindly guide me with some example.

thanks in advance.

Dear Ajay Singh,
Please find my reply given below
1.Select the test coupon thickness of 11.8 mm to 12mm Thickness.Since you are carrying out heat treament above upper transformation temperature the  max base metal thickness limit is 1.1 x T.

2. Also due to impact test,it covers  lower T/2 limit also.i.e 6mm

I hope that you understand above explanation.

Subject: [MW:8196] how to select a PQR test coupon

Dear members

Can you please guide me to select PQR test coupon on the basis of my below requirement

1. PQR to be used for my job thickness 6.0 mm to 13 mm
2. Material of construction is SA516 GR.70 plate.
3. Welding process to be involved is only SMAW.(use higher grade consumables Like E7018-1 or E7018A1) to achieve tensile strength after Normalising)
4. Test coupon to be Normalized at 900 deg.C after completion of welding.( Soaking time should be such that it shloud cover the thickness range of the component to be normalised) Does component which is normalised will undergo PWHT ? If yes then PQR should undergo Normali +PWHT cycle.
5. Bend test, Tensile, Hardness & Impact test to be carried out as per Sec. IX.
6. All joints to be single V type and to be back chip for final run.

kindly guide me with some example.

thanks in advance.

Dear Mr. Padmanabhan,

As per Asme Sec-IX, If we are going for 12mm Thickness material then the lower limit will start from 5mm since the thickness limit of Impact Test is not applicable for PQR undergoing Normalizing.

See para. QW.403.6

Thanking you,

Best regards,

Can anyone describe the point 2 as mentioned in below. How to verify the lower and upper thickness limit when impact test applicable or when impact test not applicable.
