Dear All,

I'm preparing some WPS documents for procedure qualifications and
production documentation according to ASME section IX. In my opinion a
procedure qualification made in plate is also valid for pipes
according to ASME section IX as long as the essential variables are in
range of the specification, but can anyone tell me the paragraph where
this is mentioned in the rules? Welding process is PAW but this in my
opinion is also not an essential variable for diameter qualification.

Thanks in advance.

Your understanding is correct, refer QW211.

Dear Mr.Herman

Please refer QW-211 ( base metal)in Article II of welding procedure qualifications ASME Sec IX, which clearly mentions that qualification in plate also qualifies for pipe welding and vice versa.

What about the Welder Qualification? If welder has made a
qualification in plate according to ASME IX is it allowed to weld
pipes as well, if so from which diameter he is certified? and in which
paragraph can I find this in the rules. Because there is nothing
mentioned in QW 452.3 about this.

Here is the thread in the Sc. IX you could follow:
Tables for processes QW-35x direct you to paragraph QW-403.16
QW-403.16 directs you to QW-452, QW-303.1, QW-303.2, QW-381.1(c),
and QW-382(c)
QW-303.1 directs to QW-461.9 "Welders and welding operators who
pass the required tests for groove welds in the tests position of Table
461.9 shall be qualified for the positions of groove welds and fillet
welds shown in Table QW-461.9. In addition, welders and welding
operators who pass the required tests for groove welds shall also be
qualified to make fillet welds in all thicknesses and pipe diameters of
any size within the limits of the welding variables of QW-350 or QW-360
as applicable."
QW-461.9 (table) shows that a welder making a groove weld plate
qualification qualifies him/her for grooves in pipe with outside
diameter greater than 24in. (610mm).

Of course, you could just start from QW-303 "Limits of Qualified
Positions and Diameters (see QW-461)" and go from there.

Dear Herman Pieper

You have to qualify the welders as per QW452.3 to qualify diameter.  If a welder qualified on a plate he is allowed to weld on palte as well as  pipe over 24 inch diameter.  For below 24" dia. he should be qualified as per QW 452.3.  please refer QW 461.9

Thanks & Best Regards.

John Abraham.
