Dear Experts,
Could you inform me if there an obligation in ASME IIIV Div 1, about the quality of hydrotest water.
Our 2 vessels are in SS 316L with operating temperatures respectively 21°C and -5°C

Best Regards,

Hello Mr.Lassaad,

Find the below requirement from Saudi Aramco Material System Spec 32-SAMSS-004 for your query...

16.3.9     Water used for pressure testing shall be potable.  For vessels manufactured from stainless steel, the water shall not contain more than 50 ppm chlorides with pH value of 10 to 11 at the time of filling the vessel.

16.3.10   The temperature of the water during hydrostatic testing shall be maintained at not less than 17°C throughout the testing cycle.

I think this will help you...

Dear Lassaad,

Austenitic stainless steel is effected with a damge mechanism named "cloride strees corrosion cracking". factor directly effecting are ..

1) cloride content ( incresing content of cloride will increase the tendency of CSSC)
2) temperature (increasing temperature will increase the tendency of CSSC)
3) PH value ( PH value increaseing to alkyline region will decrease the tendency of CSSC)

to avoide this most of the code limit this, but ASME VIII div 1 is a construction code and water quality will impact on  life  of equipment so there is no any restriction about the fluide except the temperature during hydrot test wich is also directly related to brittle behaviour to the material.

for further information please refer to client specification if nothing is there then read api 510

5.8.4 Hydrostatic Pressure Tests

5.8.4.2

Hydrostatic pressure tests of equipment having components of Type 300 series stainless steel should be conducted with

potable water or steam condensate having a chloride concentration of less than 50 ppm. After the test, the vessel should be completely

drained and dried. The inspector should verify the specified water quality is used and that the vessel has been drained and

dried."
