In the recent past some inspectors are asking for welding of IS:2062 plate thickness of 10mm with E 7018 electrodes. is it really required. the job isa silo of 12 mtrs x 14mtrs self supported structure. why we should not use E6013 electrodes

both electrodes can be used, although E7018 gives more quality and strength when a project is concerned

Dear Venu
You can use either E-603 or E-7018, generally for IS2062 plate it is recommended to use E7018 after 20 mm thickness, because it is economical, though it is always better to use 7018 for lower thickness also, due to its excellant penetrating properties.
Also qualifying a welder with 7018 is easier than qualifying a welder in 6013

It is meaningless to recommend or use E 7018 for IS 2062, 10 mm thk. E 6013 will do as its UTS values
falls within the limits of E 6013..

For normal structural jobs with static loads of 20 /25 mm thk. also, E 6013 should work out better.

E 6013 & E 7018 both are medium penetrating type electrodes. E 7018  may give some extra penetration when used with DCEN compared to DCEP but, again not required for lower thicknesses.

Welder qualification is easier with E 6013 comparatively but, E 7018 with F 4 may qualify E 6013 with F 2 also.

Further Using  E 7018 is not economical  in place of E 6013.

Hence try to convenience your inspectors to make your procedure acceptable  and economical.

since tensile is 42kg/mm2, we can use E6013. since Hydrogen level is more ( 15 to 30 ml/100gm weld metal), it is not advisable to use in thick more 13 mm, otherwise u can use

some correction in E7018 will not work in DCEN
