There are many procedures to join the rails.
One such easy procedure is use of E 312 ( 30% Cr & 10 % Ni) through SMAW process.
This could be done better by FCAW process with equivalent filler wire.
A preheating of 300 /350 deg. C and a inter pass temp. of 250 Deg. C shall help to avoid HAZ cracks.
Any cracks seen in the initial 3 to 4 runs should be ground off to sound weld metal.
Since the rail joint is deep, the bevel opening could be kept low (say 15 to 20 deg) and opening to suit
the torch maneuverability and s copper strip of 8 mm thick or so could be used as a back up for initial runs.
A buffer layer of 2 to 3 runs on either side of fraying surfaces before joining with same type of consumable
will help to get a good fusion line between the base mental and weld.
The
post weld heating to same temp coupled by slow cooling (by proper covering beyond HAZ) will help
to avoid cracks in HAZ.
Advantage with this procedure is, you can avoid PWHT.
Trust it will help you to weld a new or a cracked joint.
