Hi Guys,

SA516 means the material specification A516 (ASTM A516) Is listed under ASME code section II, for that put S before A516 to specify the material listed under ASME to become SA516. and can check the material specification from ASME II sec A

Best Regards,

"A" is an ASTM designation for materials indicating that the iron content is 50% or more (ferrous material). If the iron content is less than 50%, the next abundant element would determine the alloy type (and the specification generally would start with the letter B).

If an ASTM material specification has been adopted by ASME, an "S" is added to the designation.

The SA (SA-516) means it is a ferrous material specification from ASTM, that has been adopted for Code use by ASME.

Dont look for exact expansion for S & A, like S means Steel and  A means Authority.

Thanks and Regards

Dear All,

Adding to Rameshkannan Devaraj's explanation, please note:

‘SA’ is a prefix of the ASME specification, whereas ‘A’ is prefix from ASTM.
The ASME SA516 is a part of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC),
a standard which governs the use of carbon steel in weldable industrial boilers and pressure vessels.
Material specifications for SA materials can be found In Section II Part A.
Further, for the non-ferrous material the prefix ‘SB’ is used which can be found in Section II Part B.
Hope this clarifies  your query.
Thanks & regards
Ashok Rai
