Dear Experts,
Subject Material: CS/MS Pipes (Dia 2" To 10" x 8 to 10 mm thk) Fit up inspections (As Per ASME B 31.1),
In general WPS root gap is shown as 2 to 3 mm, but practically I have seen that root gap exceeds up to 5 mm in actual fit ups and still proper & full penetration weld is achieved with this much of root gap.
Also welder argues that the root gap is required up to 4 to 5 mm to minimize the contraction of joint after welding.
The same case is with root face that in WPS root face is shown as around 1.6 mm, but practically I have seen that
root face of 0.5 mm only or without root face in actual fit ups and still proper &
full penetration weld is achieved.
Although the root gap & root face is a non essential variable as per section IX, but still can we reject the pipe fit ups of root gap of 5 mm & nil root face ?
Can anyone provide some good article / reading material regarding recommendations for pipe fit ups with type of joints & dimensions ?
I need your valuable replies.............
