Dear All

I have been stuck with a question that in all WPS variable table QW 409.4 and QW 410.9 is marked, both supplementary as well as non-essential variable. Why is it so?

As per ASME Sec-IX QW 409.4 is supplementary variable because when your are change AC TO DC OR DC TO AC  it will effect heat input i.e the  penetration and deposition will increase and decrease. So it will effect the toughness.

QW410.9 is also a supplementary variable when PWHT above the upper transformation
temperature or when an austenitic or P-No. 10H material
is solution annealed after welding.

If the construction code requires impact testing for base metal(s) or weld metal, then the for the WPS the variable is supplementary essential.

If the construction code does not require impact testing for base metal(s) or weld metal, then for the WPS the variable is non-essential.

Thus, the attribution of the variable is application dependent.

Probably Avinash's intention asking this was why these are cross marked under both Supplementary as well as non essential variables for a particular process. well please note that it is required by code to address all variables (essential as well as non essential) in the WPS.

Dear Sir
1. If impact is getting affected then supplementary variable is essential, if not then non-essential(As marked for various variable in a WPS)
2. So  why in specific case of QW410.9 and QW409.4 , marked both supplementary and non essential.
