Dear members,

Following situation/type of tank can be designed inaccordance with API 650...?

situation:

- Vertical cylindrical shell, dia 2650mm
- height, 3500mm
- tank bottom: 2:1 ellipsoidal dished head
- tank top: flat closing (stiffners welded from inside surface) - plate welded to shell (on top plate agitator arrangement will be mounted)
- tank supported by 04 legs

if not API 650, inaccordance with which code/standard this tank can be designed?

Please advise/share your views.

Regards,
Manohar.

Hi Manohar

API 650 tanks are generally for storage service at atmospheric pressure. Also the bottom of the API 650 tanks are uniformly and fully supported.Hence not applicable in this case.
In your case it is an agitated vessel which will have certain amount of internal pressure according to the intended service conditions. So this is a pressure vessel which can be designed as per ASME section VIII div I with special process design of agitator assembly. Leg supports with lugs can be designed as per the methods described in process equipment design books such as Brownell&Young.
The entire design of the vessel can be performed using design softwares such as PVelite.

Regards
