Dear All

I have to make a WPS and PQR for Pipe ASTM 106 Gr. B (P no. 1and Gr.
no.1) and Dishend SA 516 Gr. 70 (P no. 1 but Gr. no.2) both 40mm thk &
24" dia using GTAW Root and Hot Pass then SMAW for the remaining
passes as per Sec. IX of ASME.

Kindly give your input on below points.....
1) Is it possible to make only one WPS for the above processes?
2) What should be the joint design for both and also SA 516 Gr. 70 is
not available in pipe?
3) What should be the recommended filler rod and Electrode to be used?
4) What thickness of pipe to be used to qualify the above WPS so it
can for the production weld?
5) What should be the preheat temp and Interpass temp?

If you have any sample WPS and PQR for this then Pl do forward it to
me.

Looking forward for your reply.

Dear Mr. Gupta,

1) Only one WPS/PQR can qualify your range.

2) You can qualify the same using a 20 - 22 mm Plate coupon.

3) Filler to be used - ER 70S2 & E 7018 for SMAW.

4) You can qualify with Single -V Butt Joint.

Dear Vikas

Many thanks for your input....but I am still not sure how to use both the material test specimen together as one is pipe and other is plate material (SA 516 Gr. 70 has different Group no. but P no. is same).

Mr. Vikas,

You are pointing that only one WPS for the Pipe and Plate despite the P numbers are the same?

Dear Gupta,
1. One WPS with combinatipn of 2 PQR also allowed. If u have 1PQR for GTAW & 2PQR for SMAW separately.
2. Recomended to use MIN 38mm plate since above thk 38mm required PWHT.
3. Filler ER70S-6 - GTAW / SMAW E7018/E7016
4. Material can be SA517 GR70 or any P1 group material. (If no impact test, if yes Group no is essential), either plate or pipe will do @ thk 38mm.
5. Pre-heat 10 deg c for t >32mm (aslo can refer ASME Sec 8 div 1) at non mandotary appendix R.

Regards,
KavinM

Hi,
If your construction code is ASME,then WPS with Plate or pipe can be used for both in production joint. If there is no Impact test requirements, you can use the WPS with either group number.

Thanks & Regards,

What i can suggest you are as follows:
1. yes
2. when you're preparing a welding procedure, the position in the PQR test coupon is not an essential variable (unless impact testing is required by the code or a project specification). You can use - let say 3G- position. All what you need is to re-write "all position" in you wps. If your wps only identifies the 3G position so unless the revised your WPS to list "all position" they should not be welding anything but 3G.
3. You can use a filler material that is classified under the ER 70S-2 class for GTAW and E 7018 for SMAW.
4. You can qualify thickness of test coupon from 3/4" (19mm) to less than 38mm.
5. 450 degree F.

Let this provides you help.

in one PQR.

Hi,
No need to do 2 PQRS. you can do with one PQR to cover required thickness for each process.(Root GTAW and Cover SMAW)

Thanks & Regards,

Hi,

You may complete the total process in 1 PQR - which will contain all the
details.

Thanks and Regards.................
