Dear all,

          Regarding Carbon Steel material SA516 Gr60 and SA516 Gr60N .

 my doubts as follows,

1. what is the difference between them.
2. Generally how we will get from the manufacturer/supplier.
3. Whether we can use instead of SA516 Gr 60  with SA 516 Gr60N.

Note : It is ASME Vessel. "'U'" Stamp job. Consider this as urgent . Reply immediately.

Hi Andrews,

The basic diffrerence between SA516 Gr.60 and SA516 Gr.60N is the plates supplied by the manufacturer with normalize.It Denotes "N".

But As per ASME Section-II Part-A,Plate thickness up to 40mm shall be supplied in "As rolled Condition".More than this thickness shall be supplied with Normalizing.When notch toughness tests are required on plates of 40mm and under thickness,the plates shall be normalized unless otherwise specified by the owner.

In some cases Owner may require the plates with normalize condition even if the thickness is lesser than the 40mm.In this case you have to follow the owner's requirement.

Thanks & Regards,

hi

I HAVE MET THE SAME PROBLEM IN A U-STAMP VESSELS, the required condition is as-rolled plates, while the vendor sent normalized plates( SA 516-70N), , The ASME inspector didnt reject, as normalizing enhance the mechanical properties.
---- at the worst case, raise NCR to the design dept. to solve it,.

the difference between normalizing and as rolled - plates, is that the normalized ones have fine grain structure, which enhance the toughness,

while the reverse is rejected, as we cant use as-rolled plates instead of normalized ones.
in ASME II-A ( SA 516),PARA 5,  NORMALIZING IS ESSENTIAL FOR PLATES OVER 40 mm

Dear,

Normalizing of steels is used mainly to:
  • Balance structure and reduce grain size (as a post–heat treatment method);
  • Improve machinability and impact toughness of steel–casts;
  • Remove macrostructure created by irregular forming and slab;to soften, give uniform microstructure
  • Remove macrostucture created by welding;
  • Equalize quality and impact toughness after hot forming.

So I don't think that it is big issue in normal circumstances.Based on code, others comments expected...
