Dear All,

I have to weld 40 mm thk ss 304 plate to be welded with root GTAW and
subsequent run by SMAW. I have 2 WPS,one WPS GTAW + SMAW thickness
range qualified is 1.6 to 12 mm and another procedure qualified 5 mm
to 50 mm with back gouging.

My doubt is can i make one wps supporting with these 2 Procedure
Root with GTAW and subsequent run with SMAW so i can carry out the
welding with GTA + SMAW 40 mm thk without further procedure
qualification.

Thanks & Regards.
Manoj

No - if ASME Section IX is the governing Code.

See ASME Section IX QW-200.4 especially QW-200.4 (b).

QW-200.4 (b) allows combination of root procedure with any thicker
qualified fill procedure provided the base metal thickness as 13mm or
greater.

Dear All,

Thanks & Regards.

Dear Manoj
Technically  in your case you can not .As in your case GTAW process is qualified for base metal up to 12mm therefore you can not use GTAW process for base metal thk more than 12 mm (Therefore generaly PQR for multiple process being qualified on the test plate having more than 38mm plate to  cover max base metal range)

No, the first wps GTAW+SMAW thk 1.6 to 12 mm, cannot be used, because maximum thickness not qualified...

I THINK FROM ONE PQR WE CAN GENERATE AN MANY WPS BASED ON NON ESSENTIAL VARIABLES.

BUT THE MATTER OF THE CHANGE IN PROCESS IN WPS IS ESSENTIAL VARIABLE ,NEED TO QUALIFY AN WPS WITH REQUIRED THICKNESS .ITO HAVE NEW  CHANGES YOUR HARDNESS OF THE SPECIMEN TOO.
BETTER TO HAVE AN PQR WITH YOUR REQUIRED THICKNESS & PROCESS.

Yes you can go head with two combine proccess wiyh one WPS. But PQR shall be qualified with WPS.

Dear Manoj,
As per ASME Sec-IX, If you want to use the Root Pass of one PQR on second PQR, it should be qualified on atleast 13mm thick plate.
Hope this will clarify.

Ali,

You can shoot two films at a time, which are in SAME CASSETTE. this is called Composite Viewing. Refer ASME SEC V, Article II.

Dear Manoj,

As per ASME Sec. IX QW 200.4 (b) it is not possible.
For that you have require PQR (GTAW) above 13 mm qualified for root run. And another PQR (SMAW) covering base metal thickness above 40 mm required.
Means you have to go for new PQR.
