Dear Experts

Can anybody explain me following about WPS & PQR as per ASME sex IX.

If my PQR qualifed with soaking temperature 630 deg. C to 650 deg. C and soaking time 2 hrs 30 minutes maximum, so my question is can WPS qualify for temperature range 600-620 deg.c or above 650 deg.c and soaking time 3 hrs or 2hrs.

My question for which temperature range or soaking time range I can use for WPS if my PQR qualified as per above mentioned PQR range ?.

Thanks in advance

Thanks
Ram

Dear Ram,

the PWHT  temperature depend only to material grade. Your PQR is prepared for this range of temperature according material grade, so you can use it for the same material grade in production.

The time is according material thickness, you check the thickness qualified range and calculate the time as 1h per 01 inch thickness. (Refer to your construction code)

Regards.

1. You need to mention what type of material and P. No. it belongs to.
2. Whether Impact test is specified or not as per design conditions.

Subject: [MW:18561] PWHT range for WPS
Dear Experts

Can anybody explain me following about WPS & PQR as per ASME sex IX.

If my PQR qualifed with soaking temperature 630 deg. C to 650 deg. C and soaking time 2 hrs 30 minutes maximum, so my question is can WPS qualify for temperature range 600-620 deg.c or above 650 deg.c and soaking time 3 hrs or 2hrs
It depends upon  Impact requirement i) If your PQR is qualified for Non Impact requirement in this case You have to satis fy QW407 .1   where The PWHT temp below crirical tempi.e. 720C   is acceptable and you can use PWHT temp between 600-720C However () Please bear in mind that CS grade  UTS deteoriates with Higher temp PWHT with higher soaking time even say above 650C-720C  .PWHT hence generaly the UTS0f  CS component being PWHT between 600-630C ( some time even at 650C PWHT deteriotes)
ii) In case of Impact requirement -You require to satisfy QW407.1 and 2  where time and temp of PWHT is suplimentary Essential
Generaly some of the licensor do not allow PWHT temp above 630C  for CS and they will agree only when you qualify PQR separately at that higher temp say above 650C but below 700C

My question for which temperature range or soaking time range I can use for WPS if my PQR qualified as per above mentioned PQR range ?.

Thanks in advance

Thanks
Ram

Dear James

Material is SA 516 Gr 70 # SA 516 Gr 70 (P no. 1, Group-2) and Impact test not required
PQR - thickness 50 mm and shell & dished end 70 & 78 mm thk.

Thanks & Regards
Ram

In your case, soaking time is not an essential variable. Also, if you keep below 720 C, temperature range would also be not an issue. Compliance to your construction code is also necessary.

Dear James
You should specify minimum temperature of design. According to ASME SEC. VIII DIV. I is necessary to know it. Depending of min. Temp. Of design you will know if you need or not.
