Dear Welding Experts,

I would appreciate your clarification on the following ASME Section IX question:

If a welder is qualified by a 6G fixed-position and the supporting PQR/WPS was also qualified in the 6G position, can this welder perform production welding with the pipe rotated during welding process?

My understanding is that, according to QW-122, 6G is a fixed position where the pipe is not rotated, while a 6G welder qualification generally qualifies the welder for the applicable welding positions, including 1G, subject to the relevant limitations and variables.

Therefore, can he rotate the pipe during production welding when the welder’s WPQ is 6G?

I would appreciate it if someone could provide the exact applicable clauses from ASME Section IX (QW-122, QW-303, QW-461.9, and any other relevant paragraphs) to support the interpretation.

Thank you in advance for your expert opinion and clarification.

Warm regards,

Muhammad Ishtiaq

As per sex IX for WPS, position is the non essential veriable. For WQT position is the essential veriable.
If WPS qualified in 1G position,we can use for production welding in any position.
During production welding based on joint position, we have to choose qualified welder based on his qualification.

He can weld in all positions as he is qualified for 6G. If it is shop Weld you can rotate the pipe. I hope when its field weld you may not have that option.
