Dear members,

I have one query regarding WPS.

1) One of my client made a comment on a WPS which i had submitted to
them for approvel that Procedures are from 2001. My question is Is
there any time limit for WPS? In my knowledge answer is No, a
qulified procedure can be used any time without changing the essential
variable.

2) I have one qualified wps with base metal S 355 JR to S 275 JR.
Can I use this WPS to weld S 355 JR to S 355 JR and S 275 JR to S 275
JR?

Please clear my doubts, if possible with code reference.

Thanks & Regards.

Hi Manoj,

This is not a code issue, usually Big End Users like Shell, Exxon etc specify a time Limit for WPS,

"All WPS with qualification greater than 7 years shall be requalified" is an extract from Exxon Welding Spec, In order to approve WPS and satisfy Client you need to evidence of continuous use of WPS till date, attach a Welding Log showing previous clients, year and application of the same WPS.

Trust me it will work since we have done the same thing before.

Hi,
For Quiery No.1 : you can use as per QW100.3.Please find below the extraction.
QW-100.3 Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS)
written and qualified in accordance with the rules of this
Section, and welders and welding operators of automatic
and machine welding equipment also qualified in accordance
with these rules may be used in any construction
built to the requirements of the ASME Boiler and Pressure
Vessel Code or the ASME B31 Code for Pressure Piping.
However, other Sections of the Code state the conditions
under which Section IX requirements are mandatory, in
whole or in part, and give additional requirements. The
reader is advised to take these provisions into consideration
when using this Section.

Welding Procedure Specifications, Procedure Qualification
Records, and Welder/Welding Operator Performance
Qualification made in accordance with the requirements
of the 1962 Edition or any later Edition of Section IX may
be used in any construction built to the ASME Boiler and
Pressure Vessel Code or the ASME B31 Code for Pressure
Piping.
Welding Procedure Specifications, Procedure Qualification
Records, and Welder/Welding Operator Performance
Qualification made in accordance with the requirements
of the Editions of Section IX prior to 1962, in which all
of the requirements of the 1962 Edition or later Editions
are met, may also be used.
Welding Procedure Specifications and Welder/Welding
Operator Performance Qualification records meeting the
above requirements do not need to be amended to include
any variables required by later Editions and Addenda.
Qualification of new Welding Procedure Specifications
or Welders/Welding Operators and requalification of
existing Welding Procedure Specifications or Welders/
Welding Operators shall be in accordance with the current
Edition (see Foreword) and Addenda of Section IX.

Quirey No.2:
Yes.You can use,Because both are same group number(Group no.1 - S355JR-Gr.No.1.2
S275JR - Gr.No.1.1 acc.to ISO20172)
As per ISO15614,Table - 3 ,WPS qualified with Gr.No.1-1 can qualified for 1-1 with restrict to Note - a as specified below.

Table 3 — Range of qualification for steel groups and sub-groups
Material (sub-)   Range of qualification
group of test      1  – 1 (Note-a)
piece
1 - 1

Note (a) : Covers the equal or lower specified yield strength steels of the same group

Dear John

You are on the right path. a PQR always remain valid, if they meet all the requirement of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section IX -1962 edition or latest edition. See QW -100.3

Question #2. QW-424 specifies that test coupon made from unassigned material to unassigned material is qualified for unassigned material to itself. Since there is no code describes its material grouping (like P range in ASME IX), to know exactly how you can weld S 355 JR to S 355JR and S 275 JR to S 275, it can only be evaluated by qualifying a PQR.

hi

WPS is 2001 and after your  material BS EN 10025 is also revised check it with latest then compare any changes in base metal. Other thing is if Third party is not approving it or your client is not approving then you have to qualify fresh PQR.

2. yes.

Hi

Point no 1
as per EN ISO 15607 clause 7, a WPS is A qualification is valid
indefinitely for the ranges qualified unless otherwise specified.

Point no. 2
For that you should need to know what is the yield strength of the
filler wire, if it is relative to S355 JR, then you can weld S355 JR
to S355 JR, or if it is relative to
S275 JR, then its not qualified.
Yes you can weld S275 JR to S275 JR with this WPS.
Because both material are from the same material group and your filler
wire properties are relative to it..
