Welder Qualification AWS D1.1

Hi There,

 

Code: AWS D1.1

 

As per paragraph C4.1.3.1 …….The qualification remains in effect (1) for six months beyond the date that the welder last used the welding process,….

 

Does this means the even the welder is welding on different codes as long as he’s using the same process, his qualification will still remains in effect as long as it is within the six months period? Assuming that the welder was qualified before to weld on AWS D1.1 code.

Hi Larry,

 

The default interpretation of this clause ( C4.1.3.1) is as below.It implies that welder qualified to AWS D-1.1, should  perform welding  to this code.If no structural weld is performed in 6 month's time but welder holding D-1.1 qualification continues to perform similar welding conforming to other codes (boiler or pressure vessel preferably) and there're NDE  reports available or welders log is neatly maintained , I would feel his/her qualification should be valid.

 

In case of any doubt, a check test should be called for.

SECTION 4. QUALIFICATION

4.1.3 Period of Effectiveness

4.1.3.1 Welders and Welding Operators. The welder’s or welding operator’s qualification as specified in this code shall be considered as remaining in effect indefinitely unless (1) the welder is not engaged in a given process of welding for which the welder or welding operator is qualified for a period exceeding six months or unless (2) there is some specific reason to question a welder’s or welding operator’s ability (see 4.32.1).
