Dear experts,

My contractors wants to use approved 2G position WPS for production joints which in 5G/6g position other than 2G position and WQT for 6G position. References to ASME. Can we proceed to do that or do we need to use approved WPS in 6G/ALL positions?

Regards,
Sya

Can. Position is not a essential variables in ASME Sec IX. Can rewrite the WPS for ‘position: All.’

ok, i understand but they do not want to rewrite the WPS position to "ALL" because they said the position is non essential, they ignore it and they want proceed to use that 2G WPS for production/WQT. They are the stubborn contractor to deal with.

Dear,
If your WPS is established from ASME Sec IX, then please refer to Table QW-256 for GTAW Welding variables under QW-405.1, where addition of Position is a non essential variables, hence WPS can be rewritten for all positions & can be used on job.

cordially,
Jay Poojary

Pl note, in WPS position is not essential variable hence same WPS can acceptable in any position however welder must be qualified 6G/5G with applicable group of materials qualification range as per applicable code.

It is ok. If vendor will not change position in WPS. Still you can use

Right. for Non Essential variables, you don't need to qualify the WPS/PQR. but even if variables is non essential, but you have to indicate that changes in WPS and need do revised it accordingly ASME SECTION 9.

Under ASME Section IX, it is acceptable to use a WPS qualified with a 2G PQR for production welds

made in 5G or 6G provided the WPS remains within its qualified essential variable ranges.

You do not need to qualify a separate WPS in 5G or 6G solely because production welding is in those

positions.

However, the welders are to be individually qualified for the production welding positions like 5G and 6G.

Otherwise, a contractor cannot use them other than in the 2G position. If the welder is qualified in 6G,

Then he can weld in all positions, including fillets.

Please correct it to "welding positions like 5G (or) 6G"
Regret the typographical error.

Yes, under ASME Section IX, you can generally use a WPS that was qualified with a 2G procedure qualification test for production welding in 5G or 6G positions. You do not normally need to requalify the WPS in 6G/ALL positions.

The important point is that WPS qualification and welder qualification (WQT/WPQ) are two different things.

Under ASME Section IX, it is generally permissible to use an approved 2G WPS for production welds made in 5G or 6G, provided the WPS is otherwise valid and all essential variables are satisfied. The critical requirement is that the welder is qualified for the production position (e.g., 6G). You do not normally need a separate WPS qualified in 6G or "all positions" unless required by the governing construction code or project specification.

Noted.

This is a short table to easily check what is needed for each Item:

ItemQualificationProduction
WPS/PQR2G5G or 6G
Welder/WPQ6G5G or 6G
Result✅ Acceptable in principle

Dear Mr.

All essential and nonessential variables specified in the WPS must be strictly followed. Once a variable is specified in the WPS, you are only permitted to perform the welding in accordance with that WPS. You can refer to QW-101; QW-200.1 for reference.

This means that if the WPS specifies only the 2G welding position, it may only be used for welding in the 2G position. If you want the WPS to cover all welding positions, the WPS must be revised accordingly (refer QW-203)

Hi,

you need to verify whether the supporting PQR for that WPS qualifies all required positions, the welding position used for PQR can be an essential variable for some welding processes. If the PQR was qualified only in 2G, it does not qualify the WPS for all welding positions. You must check the applicable essential variables for the specific welding process in ASME sec IX .

For WPS, welding position is not an essential variable unless there is a requirement for Toughness. For Welders , Welding Position is an essential variable.

Hai,

Please note that welding positions for procedure qualification is a non essential variable.
(in the Previous asme sec IX Editions, addition of position was a supplementary essential variable which is applicable only if toughness requirments applicable)

So if you qualify the PQR in any positions will qualify all positions.(for the welding process like GTAW, SMAW, FCAW, GMAW & SAW).

Regarding the performance qualifications, positions qualifications shall follow ASME section IX table QW 461.9.

With Regards,

SANDEEP RAGHAVAN
