API storage tank settlement tolerance.

Dear All,

I have one storage tank to erect at site as per API 650.  The size of the tank is 54 meter diameter and during water fill up test we have to measure settlement.  Can any body give me information about tank settlement tolerance and in which standard it is specified.

You need to see API 650 11th edition 7.3.6.6

7.3.6.6 If settlement measurements are specified by the Purchaser, any differential settlement greater than 13 mm per 10 m

(1/2 in. per 32 ft) of circumference or a uniform settlement over 50 mm (2 in.) shall be reported to the Purchaser for evaluation.

Filling of the tank shall be stopped until cleared by the Purchaser.

Dear All,

Yes it is the right API 650 code for tanks ring wall settelment.

Applying that, you need to split your ring wall circumference, depending on radius, into equal arcs no longer than 10m long each. Hence, during hydrotest, you load your tank in steps and you plug in the level of these circumferential points in each step.

This will help to control any differential excessive settelment
