Dear Friends,

I have one query. We are fabricating structures as per AWS D1.1.
Connecting holes on web/flanges are coming exactly on the butt weld joint area.

Can anyone tell me, whether drilled holes are allowed on butt joint areas? What does code specify in this regard?

Thanks in advance.
Regards,
G.P.Raju

Dear Raju,

Generally Code wont specify this type of drilling on but joint, but if
there is no chance of shifting the hole from butjoint, you can drill
hole , if your weld joint is sound. and also if your hole size is
less.

Dear Praba,
Base on my previous project we make a mouse hole on the web near top and bottom flange for welding and ndt access. When visual and ndt is completed we seal weld the mouse hole before blasting and painting.
Correct me if I miss understanding your your query.

Dear Aziz,

What you are talking about is "Weld Access Holes".
But my query is that if web of 12 mtrs length is required and we are Butt welding 2 plates of 6 mtrs length for this. Bracing gusset connecting holes are exactly coming on the weld area of web.
Whether these holes are allowed on onthe weld area, if it is acceptable in UT testing.

G.P.Raju

If shifting the hole is inevitable , then use(weld) a splice plate towards the Nut side  and drill through both plates.

You can drill the holes if they are inevitable to move from but strengthen the area of weld by any means.

Dear Experts

WPS for 6GR could be developed via 6GR coupon in accordance with AWS D1.1.

However, sample test or tubular mock-up test is required from time to time.

1st question

Are they mandatory for all 6GR qualification test?

2nd question

Can fabricator select test method, sample test or tubular mock-up ?

Your prompt advice would be highly appreciated.

Dear Mr.Park,

Please refer and follow AWS D1.1 Table-4.1 and Table 4.5 for Essential Varaiables for Welding Position.

For testting, you can refer clause 4.12 for tubular connections.

Hope U can search all these from Section 4, AWS D1.1.

FYI, I am working for KC Cottrell, Anseong city, Gyeonggi-do Korea.

Cheers,
