Hello friends.
I had the opportunity to follow a situation involving an error in the application of welding consumables, which could be used as a learning situation for me and for everyone.
A spool assembler should weld together an SS304L sleeve with a Monel 400 (70Ni30Cu) pipe. Out of carelessness, consumable SS309L was used when executing this dissimilar joint connection, instead of using ER NiCr-3.
The result was disastrous as cracks and other linear signs appeared in a widespread manner.
The question is: what is the metallurgical cause that generated these systemic set of defects? I don't think it's simply hot cracking.
All help will be greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
