Dear Expert,
I need to clarify regarding the heating rate/cooling rate during PWHT as per B31.3, I referred code but it is not giving clear idea or maybe I can’t interpret properly. Please advise with code backing. If suppose I have P NO 1 material of thickness 46 mm than what would be the
1. soaking time
2. cooling rate
3. heating rate
regards
shashi
Dear Shashi,
1. Soaking time for P1 Material as per Table 331.1.1 ie 2.4min per mm so in your case its 46 X 2.4minutes = 110.4 minutes (minimum)
2. Cooling rate and heating rate is not mentioned in B31.3 for P. No.1 it’s up to you while establishing the PQR,
331.1.4 Heating and Cooling does not mention anything about rates. You can refer interpretations 1-69 which clearly says no specific
Heating rates are required while performing PWHT. (see below interpretation for your ref.)
B31.3 Interpretations No. I 1-69
Interpretation: 1-69
Subject: Table 331.3.1, Requirements for Heat Treatment
Date Issued: June 9,1982
File: 1593
Question (I): Docs ANSI/ASME B31 .3 require specific heating rates when performing heat treatment?
Reply (1): No.
Question (2): Does the cooling rate at the bottom of Table 331.3.1 apply only to P-No. llA, Group
No.1 materials?
Reply (2): Yes.
Cheers
MM
