Croquis drawing is quick and sketchy drawing of a live model. Croquis drawings are usually made in a few minutes, after which the model changes pose or leaves and another croquis is drawn. The word croquis comes from French and means simply "sketch". A croquis is often an outline silhouette, for use by a designer.[1]

In fashion, the term refers to a quick sketch of a figure (typically nine heads tall as this is the accepted proportions for fashion illustration) with a loose drawing of the clothes that are being designed. Often a large number of croquis drawings will be created for one finished look, which is fully drawn and finished.

You may have heard that croquis drawing is a good way to practice rough sketching an illustration, but it isn't just rough sketching. So what is croquis drawing? In this tutorial, I will go over what croquis drawing is and how it improves your drawing skills and your ability to draw what you see.

Croquis drawing is briefly drawing something in a short period of time. The method consists of reducing the complicated details of the human body into the simplest elements in order to quickly capture the essential elements (proportion, balance, mood) of the pose. No special equipment is required for croquis drawing, so you can practice it even if you only have a sketchbook and a pencil. Making croquis drawing a common practice will also improve your drawing skills because it gradually allows you to recognize and draw the most important elements of the figure that you see.

Another benefit of digital croquis sketches is the various pens or brushes you can use. These mimic the feeling and look of traditional drawing media. You can also configure brush tool settings to your personal drawing preferences. I also use a customized brush when digitally drawing.

Although drawing real figures is always best, 3D model features in drawing software and 3D figure apps are quite useful for digital croquis sketches. Some examples of 3D modeling software can be found below:

The key to croquis sketching is to quickly draw your lines. Do not fear mistakes and draw as many lines as you need to. As you get used to croquis sketching, adding in some line width variation can bring even more life to your work.

If you continuously draw croquis, you will gradually learn body shape and proportions such as the overall shape of the figure, bone shapes, the width/length of arms and legs, etc. Additionally, you will learn to focus on where the center of gravity is. Natural poses have an accurate center of gravity.

The benefit of drawing without first sketching the guidelines is increased drawing speed. After drawing croquis long enough, you no longer need to sketch body outlines because your brain has gradually remembered different body balances and poses over time.

Famous artists often draw characters without sketching them out first. They can do this because they have a strong idea of what they want to draw. It takes a lot of effort to reach this level, but practicing croquis sketches will definitely help you to reach it. Professional artists look at many materials and references and create croquis drawings. Many consistently carry a sketchbook and pen with them to draw the people or animals surrounding them at any time.

After posting my curvaceous croquis I got numerous requests for a back view. And Croquis Part II still remains my most read blog post. Of course revisit it if you want to know how to draw your own 10 head fashion figure. Recently Justine Limpusparish created a fabulous template showing you how to pivot your fashion figure. This will help you vary poses on the basics. And give you much more flexibility in your designs.

One of the most important elements in design is proportion. By drawing a custom croquis you are able to create a harmony between the design and your individual body proportions. Ultimately producing more flattering designs

Now I like to ink them and add various design lines to the croquis figure. I also created a side view and added heels. Here are some other peoples custom croquis images/tutorials I came across online Here & here & here & here & here & here . I think you get the picture.

MyBodyModel is an app that makes custom fashion croquis templates (body outline sketches) with your real body measurements. Get your own printable & digital fashion sketchbook and draw your fashion designs on a body model that looks like you.

Straight up, my least favorite part of my sewing journal is having to cut out the tiny croquis to glue into their boxes. The dedicated part of me would stress herself out when it came to getting every single piece of paper from between the hands. So when the idea of getting the croquis made into a custom stamp came up, I was more than intrigued.

The shop I ended up using was SayaBellStamps, and they had the option for buying an unmounted stamp so you could use an acrylic block if you wanted. My mom is big into the Scrapbook/paper world, so I knew an acrylic stamp would be a good option, as it lets you see exactly where they stamp will go, and you can change stamps out on the block if you have any other ones you want to use (a great option if you want to swap between your hand-on-hip and arms-down posed croquis, or your front view and back view croquis).

As we described in this post a few weeks ago, interns and volunteers are a tremendously important part of the FIDM Museum. We appreciate their varied efforts on behalf of our many objects! Today, recent intern Jasmine Helm describes her work with our collection of croquis.

As an art history major with a desire to pursue a Masters in costume studies, I needed to gain more experience working with costume objects. Therefore, applying for a summer internship at the FIDM Museum made perfect sense. FIDM Museum staff welcomed me with open arms, and decided they wanted to use my fine art expertise to help catalog their collection of croquis.

In fashion, a croquis is a quick sketch of figure wearing an outfit. Each season designers send croquis to top clients, who use them like a catalog. The FIDM Museum has a collection of about 800 croquis. Many of the croquis are connected to Betsy Bloomingdale's haute couture collection. A large number date from 1976-1992, when the House of Dior was under the direction of Marc Bohan and then Gianfranco Ferre. A small group of 1962 Balmain croquis are in the collection as well.

I had a hefty project in front of me. I had to catalog each croquis using the FIDM Museum's collection management system. I needed to describe the illustration and its condition, transcribe each inscription on the page, and identify the materials used to create the image. My knowledge of fine art and art handling experience were put to good use during this process. I was able to easily identify what materials were used to create the croquis. Many of these croquis used a variety of materials, including gouache, watercolor and colored pencil. Over time, I was able to tell the difference between an illustration from Marc Bohan and one from Gianfranco Ferre. Bohan usually had the female figure printed on the page and would have an illustrator paint the ensemble over the figure with gouache. Ferre's figures were always softer in form, and were often hand-drawn with pencil, and hand-painted with watercolor.

While working with the croquis, I also learned basic fashion terms and silhouettes, and gained the ability to identify textiles. In the catalog description, I described what the figure was wearing such as an evening dress with an empire waist or a jacket and knee-length skirt ensemble. Since the Dior croquis collection spanned over 30 years, I could see the drastic differences as styles changed. In the mid-1960s, sheath and A-line dresses were popular, while the 1970s collections featured wrap dresses and tunic and pant ensembles. The 1980s croquis included peplum dresses, and the 1990s highlighted oversized dresses. The most difficult part of my assignment was identifying fabric swatches, which were often stapled on the top or lower corners of the page. It was amazing to see just how different textiles are from each other because it is something we take for granted in everyday life. I now know the difference between silk chiffon, organza, faille and gabardine. Whenever I had any questions about ensembles or the swatches everyone was more than willing to help me and guide in the right direction. By end of my internship I had typed a document over 100 pages long!

Croquis books are a standard type of sketchbook in Japan, popular for their sturdy, portable format and high page count. Commonly carried by university students, croquis books typically feature lightweight pages that work best for dry media. The idea is to fill the book with sketches and studies while simultaneously making finished works on heavy paper or canvas. By integrating a good, reliable sketchbook into your studio practice, you can bring that art-school mentality to your work and sharpen your skills more quickly.
