Kousalya Murugesan aka Kowsi is the daughter of Murugesan, a farmer in Kulithalai, Karur. She aspires to become an international cricketer so she can put a smile on her cricket-loving father's face by helping the country win. The reason for this being portrayed in the initial scenes where Murugesan is very eager to see India's matches in the 2007 Cricket World Cup. However, he gets heartbroken on seeing India's crashing defeat to Sri Lanka in the group stages, which sees India getting subsequently knocked out. Murugesan controls his feelings before his daughter, but she witnesses him crying and being heartbroken throughout the whole night. Hence, this inspires an 11-year old Kowsi, to take up cricket seriously, represent her country, and win the World Cup one day for her father's sake.

Kowsi joins the local cricket team in the village when she is 14, which is mostly made up of her school seniors. Kowsi's off-spin bowling technique gets her wickets, and everyone starts appreciating her talent. At the same time, she also earns the wrath of many villagers as she plays cricket with boys wearing t-shirts and trousers, which is portrayed to be non-traditional. However, Murugesan does not care for this and he supports his daughter. Kowsi decides to appear for the Tamil Nadu team selection test, but she gets rejected in her first attempt. She does not give up and tries again where she succeeds and starts playing for the Tamil Nadu women's team. Her hard work pays off, and she is selected for the Indian women's cricket team. Kowsi goes to Bangalore to get trained in a national cricket academy.

Meanwhile, Murugesan faces a tough time with agriculture, as he is unable to repay the debt of Rs. 4 lakhs from a bank, resulting in a rift created between Murugesan and the bank manager. Kowsi faces a hard time in the cricket academy due to internal politics with senior players ill-treating her as she cannot speak Hindi. The team's coach also hates Kowsi and demotivates her to a large extent. However, the coach retires, and there comes a new coach named Nelson Dilipkumar. Nelson, who was an ex-Indian cricketer, had to retire after his very first International Match as he sustained a terrible eye injury, leaving him partially blind in the left eye. Nelson develops the team's spirit and gets the players ready for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Nelson spots Kowsi's spin bowling capabilities and trains her on the right path. Nelson also locks horns with the team selection committee and ensures that Kowsi is present in the World Cup squad. However, Nelson decides to rest Kowsi for the league matches, which makes her feel sad. However, Nelson reveals his strategy, that the intention was to hide Kowsi's talent from the opponents, and her bowling would be a surprise element in the semifinals.

Kowsi is selected in the playing eleven during the semifinal match against the strongest team, Australia. On that day, Murugesan's house is taken away from the bank manager for not repaying the debt. Kowsi hears this and feels bad that she is not with her father. However, Kowsi is motivated by Nelson to make her father proud by playing well in the semifinals. During the match, Kowsi bowls a hat trick and also hits a six while batting, resulting in a tie. During super over, Kowsi again bowls well, leading to India's win. Kowsi is appreciated for her bowling efforts and is awarded Rs. 5 lakhs for the "Woman of the Match" award. Upon receiving the award, Kowsi gives an emotional speech describing the situation of her father and other farmers in the country. Murugesan feels very proud of seeing Kowsi. In the closing credits, it is shown that Indian women won the T20 final against West Indies women and Kowsi was appreciated by the Tamil Nadu government for her superb bowling tactics.

It was announced that the film would be released on December 21.[5] Sivakarthikeyan's character was named Nelson Dilipkumar because Nelson Dilipkumar helped Arunraja Kamaraj during the initial stages of his career.[6]

The film's soundtrack is composed by Dhibu Ninan Thomas, who happens to be classmates with Sivakarthikeyan and Arunraja Kamaraj on their college days. The album features five songs, of which the song "Vaayadi Petha Pulla" is sung by Sivakarthikeyan and his daughter Aaradhana, alongside Vaikom Vijayalakshmi as well. The audio rights of the film are secured by Sony Music India.

Following the success of Kadhal Kondein (2003), Balu Mahendra signed on Dhanush to appear in his next film in July 2003.[1] Initially the director revealed that the film titled Adhu Oru Kana Kaalam would be an extension to his 1979 film Azhiyadha Kolangal stating that Dhanush would play a teenager infatuated by a woman who is fifteen years older than him to be played by Ramya Krishnan.[2] However he opted against doing that story and decided to build his film around his 1985 film Yathra, and the title of the film was subsequently changed to Unakkae Uyiranaen.[3] It was later changed back to the original title before release.

The shoot for the film began in December 2003 with scenes featuring the lead pair shot in Chennai.[4] The film was shot in Hogenakkal Falls in November 2004, with Dhanush marrying Aishwarya Rajinikanth in between schedules.[5] He consequently also delayed his honeymoon, to commit to a fifteen-day schedule for the film in December 2004.[6] During the making of the film, Dhanush also struck up a friendship with assistant director Vetrimaaran, and the pair have since come together for four films. The film was delayed through late 2004 after the director fell ill.[7]

In August 2005, the film faced criticism for a promotional hoarding put up in Chennai which featured photographs of Priyamani and Dhanush in a compromising position. It became the second such film during the period, where they were forced to remove the hoardings due to public protest after Silambarasan's Vallavan.[8] Further trouble occurred in October 2005, Balu Mahendra approached the police seeking action to secure a sum of Rs 3.75 lakh, an outstanding amount of his salary for directing the movie, from the producer Sai Suresh and matters were resolved quickly.[9][10] Although early reports suggested that Dhanush would be the distributor, producer Vishwas Sundar, bought the distribution rights and subsequently released the film in the Diwali season of 2005.[11][12]

After the film's release, members of the regional censor board complained that the promos of Adhu Oru Kana Kaalam were being shown on television without mentioning that the film had an "adult" certificate. At the time of censoring, Balu Mahendra was not willing to cut the deep lip-to-lip kissing scenes between the lead pair of Dhanush and Priya Mani and opted for an "A" certificate, which he subsequently refused to note down in the promotions.[13]

Shobha Warrier of Rediff.com stated that the film "disappointed", criticising the film in comparison to Mahendra's earlier work, Yathra.[15][16] The Hindu's critic noted that "excelling in technical aspects, the film falls short in the area of storyline."[17] In comparison, IndiaGlitz.com noted that "Balu Mahendra's direction is from the heart. Yet, there is a cerebral touch. He takes up subjects that are every-day, but infuses in them a special meaning. He gives his own interpretation". The critic also proceeded to praise the performances of the lead pair.[18] Lajjavathi of Kalki praised Dhanush's acting and added moderate story line and melodious music can both please the fans with quality taste like peacock feathers.[19]

Adhu Oru Kana Kaalam opened alongside other big films like Vijay-starrer Sivakasi and the Vikram-starrer Majaa. The film was described by trade pundits as a "complete wash-out".[20]

I started writing bits and pieces of the script, just writing scenes and notes as they came to me, without any sort of specific concept or story I was working towards. I had been writing whatever came to mind, including bits that belong in other projects, but after a while, I had written enough of these scenes set in Japan that I thought could be worked into a script. From there, I printed out everything I had written that was in this world and arranged them in a way that I thought could work narratively, noting where there were missing beats I needed to fill in and what not.
