Crazy Penguin Catapult is an action-adventure mobile game developed by Sumea and published by Digital Chocolate for Java ME mobile devices in 2007, and later ported to Microsoft Windows and iOS. The game revolves around courageous penguins fending off their territories from invading polar bears using a catapult. It is reminiscent of Yetisports and is believed to have inspired the famous Angry Birds mobile game[3] which it predates by two years.
Each level has two stages: the first sees the player try to use a catapult to fling penguins through a gap in the wall. Those that make it through are then brought into stage two, which has the player drop the penguins into an area filled with polar bears, the aim being to knock each of them out using the diving penguins. Polar bears are usually found hiding behind ice block structures, which penguins may have to break through with their bouncy bodies. Each penguin has a limited number of bounces.
The intro cutscene, much like Angry Birds's, shows polar bears who have kidnapped and caged several penguins. Given player's performance, the number of beaten bears attain up to 3 stars in each mission, which can eventually unlock permanent upgrades, like fire rings which put penguins on flames to melt through ice, rubber penguins upgrade which gives two more bounces, or twins, triplets and quadruplets, which add up to the total number of catapultable penguins. At the end of each of three sections of the world is a boss fight against a bear with more health points than an usual one.
Penguins in this 2011 game infiltrate the Arctic territories threatened by polar and panda bears. The campaign mode is much like Angry Birds where a flock of penguins with different characteristics get to knock out all bears in each level, launched from a spruce tree by a rope. There is also a "frenzy" mode where the player instead strategically plants dynamite into structures to make them collapse into bears.
A 2011 Frogger-style game where the penguin has to cross a river and enter an igloo, while avoiding a polar bear which throws snowballs and sometimes blocks the way. The penguin can pick up fishes from some floating platforms, throw them at the bear, and sneak into the igloo while the bear is busy eating.
Crazy Penguin Catapult was received with generally positive reviews. An IGN review compliments the music and effects as "very well done" but also that "music does loop quite a bit and may feel too repetitive to some players."[5] Pocket Gamer considers the catapulting part "a bit weak", but the addition of the strategy mode to have bulked the game out as "attractive and pleasantly playable package".[6] TheAPPera calls it "a quirky and addictive game involving throwing penguins off catapults and targeting angry polar bears. Top off with the cute soundtrack and effects, and you get one insanely fun game!"[9] Airgamer verdicted that "All animations are lovingly designed and look very funny."[8]
Ever had the urge to just get a huge slingshot and fire penguins from it? Yes, so have I. That's why I was so interested to try out Crazy Penguin Catapult 2, a game where you get the chance to help these normally flightless birds take to the sky.
The object of Crazy Penguin Catapult 2 is to help the blundering birds rescue their friends from the evil polar bears. Before the start of each level you need to select your army, which you do by firing a catapult up a mountain. You'll need to time each launch perfectly so that each penguin makes it to the top without hitting his head or flying backwards. The more of your 'soldiers' you get across the better chance you'll stand in the main level.
In each level you need to destroy a given number of polar bears. You do this through the use of flying penguins, who are cannoned over the top of the bears. Tap the screen when you want him to dive-bomb and any polar bears the penguin hits on the way down will be eliminated. Of course, it's not quite as straightforward as this, and there are all sorts of traps, ice blocks, buttons and levers to content with that help add some spice to the gameplay.
Use your mouse or the space-bar on your keyboard to control the actions that you are making. Each level has two different parts. The first part consists of catapulting all the penguins through the open space. One by one, the penguins will go down on a rope. Click on the screen when you are ready and catapult them to the second part of the level.
Using the mouse or the space-bar, click after the penguins are in the air. You can take down more polar bears with one penguin. During some levels, you need to break the ice to get to them. The level ends when you run out of penguins.
If you do not take down the number of polar bears required by the level and you do not have any more penguins, the game will be over. You can replay it anytime, but you will start on the very first level.
Yes, they're both cuddling and oh-so-harmless, but apparently they hate each others' guts, as the game for the iPhone and iPod Touch from Digital Chocolate pits one against the other and forces you to catapult penguins through fire rings and smash them through ice bricks to ultimately knock polar bears out cold.
At first you get to walk your penguin from mission location to mission location on a heroes-style map. Each of those missions gets harder in difficulty, but essentially they all rely on the same basic principles of game-style. Each consists of two phases for the game. At first, your task is to successfully launch a series of penguins through a targeted area with a catapult. The penguins bounce up and down on a rope, and your catapult operator penguing has to hit the bouncer at just the precise time to make it go to the next phase, where it will play its role as a live bomb to strike down those ferocious polar bears.
In the final phase, you have to use the flying penguins that made it through the first round to destroy any ice barrier blocking the paths to the vicious polar bears down bellow. Wiping out the bears with a limited number of penguins takes a bit of luck and a lot of strategy, as you might have to sacrifice a couple of your troops to tunnel through the ice to get to the bears. Tapping the screen at just the right time to get your penguin through a narrow vent. After the penguins ricochet all over the place, bouncing for a limited number of bounces, you move on to the next available kamikaze up in the sky, and it takes on from where the other one left of.
Even though the storyline is not quite well spelled out for us from the beginning, the loading screen graphics and the subsequent missions tells us that those nasty polar bears were up to no good, they capture your penguin friends and it's up to you to put a stop to all this penguin killing.
