Shenzhen Wesion Technology, a maker of single-board computers and media players, has developed its Khadas Mind. This concept workstation can be expanded with proprietary docks featuring extra ports or a built-in graphics processor. There is a catch, though. Unlike traditional PCs, the Hadas Mind can only be upgraded with proprietary docks and cannot support standard Thunderbolt or USB4 devices.
Wesion's Khadas Mind is a tiny workstation that measures 14610520mm (5.754.130.79 inches) and packs Intel's 12-core Core i7-1360P processor with built-in Iris Xe graphics that is mated with 32GB of LPDDR5-5200 memory and can be equipped with two M.2-2230 SSDs, one with a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface and another with a PCIe 3.0 x4 interface.
The unit can drive up to three 4K displays out-of-box and has all the connectivity features that one comes to expect from a compact workstation, including a Wi-Fi 6E + Bluetooth 5.3 adapter, two USB Type-C connectors (supporting DP, PD, and USB 2.0 or USB 3.2 Gen2), a USB 3.2 Type-A, an HDMI output, and a Mind Link header to connect to docks.
Tiny workstations with mighty capabilities are nothing new: Dell, HP, and Lenovo have offered them for years, and Apple recently debuted its Mac Mini with workstation-grade M2 Pro inside. But tiny workstations have drawbacks: they lack high-performance graphics, have limited connectivity, and cannot be upgraded. Wesion Technology plans to change this with its ultra-portable Khadas Mind workstation and a set of docks it intends to offer.
However, virtually all tiny workstations from all renowned PC makers feature a Thunderbolt or a USB4 port these days. They can add an external graphics card of your choice and plenty of extra ports using standard, widely available docks. While such setups will not look as impressive as the Khadas Mind, they will likely be cheaper and more feature rich than a Khadas Mind with its proprietary docks.

The Universal Anaesthesia Machine has been developed as a complete anaesthesia workstation for use in low- and middle-income countries, where the provision of safe general anaesthesia is often compromised by unreliable supply of electricity and anaesthetic gases. We performed a functional and clinical assessment of this anaesthetic machine, with particular reference to novel features and functioning in the intended environment. The Universal Anaesthesia Machine was found to be reliable, safe and consistent across a range of tests during targeted functional testing.
SFF PCs traditionally do not lend themselves to workstation duties. However, a recent trend towards miniaturized workstations has been observed. Since Khadas markets the Mind as a modular portable workstation, we decided to benchmark the system for both content creation workloads as well as professional applications.
The SPECworkstation 3.1 benchmark measures workstation performance based on a number of professional applications. It includes more than 140 tests based on 30 different workloads that exercise the CPU, graphics, I/O and memory hierarchy. These workloads fall into different categories.
Individual scores are generated for each test and a composite score for each category is calculated based on a reference machine (HP Z240 tower workstation using an Intel E3-1240 v5 CPU, an AMD Radeon Pro WX3100 GPU, 16GB of DDR4-2133, and a SanDisk 512GB SSD). Official benchmark results generated automatically by the benchmark itself are linked in the table below for the systems being compared.
Most of the Ryzen-based systems are equipped with a large number of high-performance cores. This translates to better performance for select workloads compared to what is obtained using the hybrid scheme of performance and efficiency cores from Intel. Within the set of systems with similar number of cores, if the generation-to-generation improvements (RPL-P being better than ADL-P) are discounted, we find that the performance is essentially dependent on the available power budget. The main exception is GPU Compute - a weak point for Intel's iGPUs, as they can't complete some of the components successfully. The net result is that the Mind Premium configurations land up in the middle of the graph across all of the SPECworkstation 3.1 components.
The snag with the Khadas Mind is that its success is all about hearts and minds. Because should the project not be massively successful, then the promised modules might not appear, and even if they do, nothing about this machine will ever be cheap.
all distro hoppers and those who like to keep their config files at /home should keep in mind that leaving /home untouched and cluttered with config files from the previous distro is bad. I had numerous issues with that when changing from Mint KDE to Mint XFCE as well as other distros. While arch can be installed or replaced by any distro without much pain that is not true for the rest.
