Hi All,

I just heard from Endro Setiawan that there is a big flowering underway in
the Gunung Palung National Park in West Kalimantan. He reckons it is as
big as 2009, which was the last really big fruiting we had. All the
durian species, mangoes and Baccaurea are flowering right now. He says it
has been a long dry season (I’m not there - wish I was!).

Is this happening elsewhere in Borneo?

Thanks Cam,
Your comments on Kalimantan remind me of years ago when my work took me to all three Bornean countries. Nice to remember even though my memories aren’t as many or as clear as they used to be. They are still a privilege to reminisce about. Cheers!

For Sabah, some species are flowering - but the usual culprits,
So, no signs of it being a GF in Sabah.

Very exciting, thanks Cam and Endro! I will make note of this for the mast mapping work underway.

It would be great if someone in GPNP can take note of when flowering stops, fruiting begins, and of what species/families. Will anyone be on the ground there for an extended period?

Hi all,
I’m currently in Pasoh under the tutelage of Yu-Yen on the phenology monitoring! Seems to be the same pattern here as reported from Sepilok - a few immature fruits coming down and I’m hearing it’s at the same stage in Danum area.
I’ll try to find out what is happening in Sumatra.
Really nice to get these updates in the group.
Best wishes
Lindsay

Cheryl Knott’s long term orangutan project team at GPNP monitors thousands of trees monthly in phenology plots across habitats.  So yes, they will be monitoring throughout the mast.

Best,
Tim

Hi pak Cam,

In the northern part of West Kalimantan (Bengkayang and Sambas regency), there is also a major flowering of the entire forest at this time. A big mass flowering also occurred in the same place exactly a year ago.
I've attached a drone photo here.

Would be interesting to see what happens to all the seedlings now that all the pigs are gone......

In Sabah, some of the pig population are recovering. Not sure how extensive the recovery is, as not in the field much these days.

Archaeology indicates that Sus barbatus is a robust animal  -- gardener of the forest

So I hope that some immunity has, or will have time to develop
