TheFree Wheelers Bike Share program provides free daily bicycles for students, faculty and staff mid-March through mid-December (weather permitting). Bicycles are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and must be returned by 7 p.m. daily or earlier depending on location operating hours.

Eligible renters must register using the Free Wheeler App. Use it to find out how many bikes are available at each check-out station, reserve a bike, track your usage and more! You will need to sign in with their UMass Lowell credentials.

Once you are registered, you can go to any Free Wheelers check-out station and request a bike. The staff will give you a key and helmet and then you can proceed to the racks to find your bike. Racks are typically blue or black, close to the building and marked with UMass Lowell Free Wheelers decals just like the decals on the bicycles. Simply match your key number with the appropriate bike number and you can unlock your bike. When returning your bike, bring it inside station, and check bike back in with staff by 7 p.m. or earlier depending on location operating hours.

Students, faculty or staff can rent a bike with a lock, helmet and lights for the entire semester. The program is meant to serve those who would like to be avid riders, but either don't own their own bike or are on campus for a semester and bringing or buying their own bike is not feasible.

By borrowing a bike you agree to be held financially responsible if the bike is damaged or stolen. Any person borrowing a bike not returned in the condition that it was issued will be charged an appropriate repair fee. Anyone not returning a bike will be charged up to an $800 replacement fee. A hold will be placed on the borrowers university account and he/she will also not be allowed to register for classes without paying the replacement fee.

The bicycle, key, lock and any other equipment must be returned to a staff member at a check-in station by 7 p.m. daily or earlier depending on location operating hours. If a U Lock or key is lost the user will be charged a $45 replacement fee. For a missing helmet the user will be charged $35.

Incurring fees while using the Freewheelers Program will result in the temporary suspension of a users account. Suspensions will be removed once fees have been paid. Users may pay fees online or at the bike shop during open hours. For all damage fees email: freewh...@uml.edu. Please allow 24-36 hours for your suspension to be lifted once the fee has been paid.

Free Bikes 4 Kidz is a nonprofit organization geared toward helping all kids ride into a happier, healthier childhood by providing bikes to those most in need. In 2023 you helped us collect, refurbish and distribute over 2,000 bikes, along with new helmets, to under-resourced kids in our community. Thank you Detroit for helping us change the lives of so many local children!

Our free learn-to-bike workshops help adults build confidence and experience the joy in riding a bike. Some workshops are offered for women and gender-diverse people, and others are open to all genders. Our experienced staff and volunteers will help each participant gain the skills and confidence to get on a bike and keep on rolling! Bikes and helmets are provided. Registration is required.

Taught in a parking lot, this 90-minute class will help you with street-readiness skills. We will learn and practice hand signals, advanced bike handling, changing gears, and defensive riding. Road Readiness classes are offered to all adults. This class is perfect for people who:

We will lead you on a 90-minute group ride to practice your street skills. The route will include off-street paths, separated bike lanes, and low-stress shared streets. On-Street Skills Classes are offered to all adults. This class is perfect for people who:

The limited on-street parking in the area is metered, with a limit of 2 hours. Off-street parking garages open to the public can be found on Cambridge Street (Centre Plaza Garage) or on Congress Street (Haymarket Garage).

While our volunteers have been busy maintaining and rearranging bikes, we are pleased that once the smoke cleared, we have four sites with a fleet of 36 bicycles, including one trike and one hand-pedal bike.

PLEASE NOTE: Bikes must be returned to the site from which they were borrowed. The times of bike availability vary with each location, but in most cases, bikes are to be returned by 4 pm. Bikes cannot be reserved. Only adult bikes are available.

The deals I had though were 50% based on personal relationships. Small business owners, bike park owners, LBS with whom I had a solid relationship. I would represent them on my gear and in the team bus and would refer customers to them as much possible. In return I received discounts. Free bikes were extremely rare, almost everyone I knew would pay something for their stuff.

To add to the above I am sure Alex Dowsett said that the Katusha Canyon bikes were loaned for the season and the riders had the option to buy at the end, same in his previous tenures.

There are regular pro bike clearouts (Cannondale recently) at the end of racing seasons, so expect the loaner is the norm.

Race results are a great way to add visibility and a positive success story for your team/sponsors but I would be surprised if winning local amateur bike races is a game changer for any local businesses that might sponsor riders or a team.

There are a lot of good points raised here about being respectful/respected in the local scene and having a strong social media presence. Volunteer work at races, leading clinics, hosting group rides that are open to all members of the community are some of the things that I see teams around here doing.

Sponsorships make sense in the context of a team and I am fortunate to be part of an organization with some really good support. But nobody is handing out top shelf race bikes and it takes a lot of work on the team side to earn the sponsorship. If your main goal is free stuff, you are barking up the wrong tree. Creating an organization that is able to support riders/races in your local scene and (hopefully) break even at the end of the year is a pretty significant accomplishment for amateur racing at the local or regional level.

ASSEMBLY: Complete Bicycles will ship 90% built and require only basic tools and knowledge to complete the build. However, a fully assembled bicycle also needs to be tuned and adjusted (oftentimes with specialty tools). We strongly encourage having your bike professionally assembled to validate your warranty and to ensure a safe and lasting ride.

WARRANTY: Warranty activated when you submit proof of professional assembly.
